The Story Behind Jason Sullivan’s Writing
Passion for Storytelling and Genre Fusion
Jason Sullivan
Born in Wales but raised in England by parents who both read and wrote for their own pleasure, I developed an early interest in the classical world, initially fascinated by the tale of Horatius Cocles defending the bridge in Macaulay.
This bloomed into a lifelong interest bordering on obsession with the complex and fascinating characters of the Roman Republic and Principate and the wonderful people that walked the roads and crossed the seas from Hadrian's Wall to Parthia.
I make no pretensions to scholarship, but I like to imagine I follow the tradition of the Victorian ‘enthusiastic amateur’ in the fact that I hope anything that I write will allow my passion and love for the Roman world to shine through while respecting the flow of history and grounding the stories in their time and place.
The cultures surrounding the classical Roman world have always fascinated me. I have taken every possible care to make their voices distinct and as much as is possible grounded in fact rather than speculation. I believe that this element of historical fiction has sometimes fallen into caricature, and I hope that I will never fall into that trap.
